Wife Recalls Stephanopoulos ‘Crying’ When Beyoncé Beat Comey Interview

ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos and singer Beyoncé are competitors, according to Ali Wentworth. It’s a rivalry worth crying over.

On Monday, comedian and actress Wentworth, who also happens to be the wife of George Stephanopoulos, appeared on The Late Show to promote her new book, Go Ask Ali. But, as she has done before, she also focused on her husband – and his recent interview with former FBI director James Comey.

“Was that a family affair, watching it?” host Stephen Colbert wanted to know.

Wentworth said yes, even though the interview didn’t take place at their apartment, as she originally imagined.

“I made some Rice Krispie treats,” she recalled. “Me and the kids wanted to play ‘Would You Rather’ with him, and George said, ‘No, I'm actually going to interview him at his house.’”

To make up for it, the family of four, including daughters Harper, 12, and Elliott, 15, watched the interview together as it aired. But Harper and Elliott also watched something else: trending topics on social media.

“My girls, of course, who live in the social media world, the whole time were like, ‘Oh my God, Daddy, oh my God, Daddy, you're No. 1, you’re trending,” Wentworth remembered. “Oh no, no, Beyoncé. Now, it’s Beyoncé.”

That’s because, Wentworth said, Beyoncé was performing at music festival Coachella around the same time.

“He started crying because he didn't want Beyoncé to beat him in the trend,” Wentworth insisted. Though not for long: “But then he got back up, and it was a fantastic interview, and so, it was an exciting night in the Stephanopoulos family.”

The following morning, on Tuesday’s Good Morning America, Wentworth joked that she wrote “all his Comey questions.”
