Falwell Jr. Says Sessions Has Lost Evangelical Support
Top conservative religious leader, and president of the conservative Liberty University, Jerry Falwell Jr., said Monday he urged President Donald Trump to give Attorney General Jeff Sessions the axe over the way he’s handled the investigations into Russian election meddling, and added that Sessions has lost the support of evangelicals.
“He really is not on the president’s team, never was,” Falwell, the president of Liberty University, said of Sessions. “He’s wanted to be attorney general for many, many years. I have a feeling he took a gamble and supported the president because he knew he would reward loyalty.”

As a Sunday school teacher at a United Methodist church in Alabama, Attorney General Jeff Sessions is one of the biggest evangelicals in the Trump administration. However, faith leaders are turning on Sessions who fought in the political arena for conservative causes for decades. Sessions was one of the first Republicans to publicly endorse Trump’s presidential campaign, and took quite a bit of heat from his party for it.
With the Justice Department not declassifying all the materials being sought by Republicans in regard to the Russian investigation, more than just Falwell is upset with Sessions. President Trump feels Sessions, who recused himself from the Russian probe due to his involvement in the 2016 campaign, has failed to rein in a probe that Trump claims in driven by politics, according to Politico.
“There’s growing disillusionment in the conservative faith-based community” with Sessions, said president of American Values, an educational nonprofit group, Gary Bauer.
