Genderqueer ‘Romeo & Juliet’ Set After Extermination of All Men to Premiere Off-Broadway
An upcoming play where the classic Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is played by actors that are all “gender-nonconforming” as well as a fully female and gender-nonconforming crew.

The off-Broadway play titled R & J , which opens October 4, is “50 years past the extermination of the male sex and the government is still relying on martial law for order amongst the factions.”
Out.com breaks down how the new version of Romeo & Juliet as: “The Montagues, the militaristic warmongers who executed the extermination, and The Capulets, the controllers of information and media, fight to regain dominance against the tightening grip of the Sovereign State. In this world of turmoil, the heirs of each faction stumble upon each other and fall in unexpected, passionate love.”
The play is adapted and directed by Molly Houlahan, and is set to run September 27th through October 14th at the Access Theater in New York.
The Hypokrit Theater mission is stated as “to encourage artistic inquiry by providing artists from underrepresented voices and minority communities a platform for their voices and work.” The theater company, producing only new work and re-imagined classics “is entirely run by and dedicated to members of minority communities.”
