Arizona 01: Republican Challenger Wendy Rogers Surging Against Democrat Incumbent

A Republican challenger in Arizona is surging against her Democrat incumbent opponent, and has the potential for an upset victory in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Wendy Rogers is polling neck and neck with Rep. Tom O’Halleran (D-Ariz.) in the state’s 1st Congressional District, and GOP turnout has been strong. Republicans are leading the early ballot race by more than 5800 in the district.

Rogers, an Air Force veteran, was one of the first 100 women to fly in combat. She was commissioned into the Air Force from Michigan State University. She received a master’s degree from the University of Alabama in Clinical Social Work. She finished her prolific military career with over 3,000 hours of flight time, earning numerous commendations, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

Her opponent, 72-year-old O’Halleran, has a less-than-stellar track record in his first term in Congress. He introduced a grand total of zero bills that made it past committee in the 2017. He has only signed on to 10 pieces of legislation out of 12,403. He voted against “The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act” which protects veterans from being denied their basic gun rights unless found lacking by a judge; or equivalent. This vote was part of a pattern of anti-Second Amendment votes on the part of O’Halleran. He also voted against concealed carry reciprocity.

O’Halleran is weak on immigration in an important border state, too. He voted against the No Sanctuary For Criminals Act, which was introduced to cut federal funding to cities that harbor illegal aliens. He also voted to cut $100 million from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Rogers, on the other hand, is strong on immigration and has vowed to stop the caravan of foreign invaders that is hurling towards the Southern border.

“We must build a border wall to protect our southern border which is virtually porous,” her website says. “We must end chain migration as well as the dangerous visa lottery that imports potential terrorists from nations that hate us and want to do us harm.”

Rogers is a supporter of President Donald J. Trump’s America First agenda.

“We must put American workers first, not bring in new people who drastically bring about wage suppression,” her site says. “Lastly, we need an E-Verify system that makes it easier to track who is coming in and out of our nation.”
