President Trump Gets Emergency Pay For The Coast Guard

The U.S. Coast Guard announced on Friday that it will provide a one-time emergency payment to its 42,000 active-duty members on Dec. 31, as the government shutdown nears its second week.

Paul Bedard reports that President Trump “personally intervened” to make sure the Coast Guard members got paid.

“The Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Coast Guard have identified a way to pay our military workforce on Dec. 31, 2018,” a post on the official Coast Guard workforce blog reads. “This one-time action applies to military members that served on active duty in the month of December and those reserve military members that drilled prior to the lapse in appropriation.”

“Here’s the latest information on the government shutdown for Coast Guard members, families and civilian employees,” the official Coast Guard twitter account said on Friday, with a link to the blog post.

The Coast Guard is a component of the U.S. military but is funded as part of the Department of Homeland Security, due to the majority of its work being conducted inside the United States. 42,000 Coast Guard employees are impacted by the shutdown of the federal government, which is now in its eighth day.

President Donald Trump has said that he will not sign legislation to fund the federal government unless funds for his proposed wall along the Southern U.S. border are included.

“This approval only covers the Dec. 31, 2018 paycheck. It does not guarantee a paycheck on Jan. 15, 2019,” the post continued. “Meeting active duty and reserve military payroll for January 2019 will require a fiscal year 2019 appropriation, a continuing resolution, or passage of an alternative measure.”

Members of the Guard who are active duty, reservists who served on active-duty during December and retirees will receive monthly paychecks on Dec. 31, according to the post. Reservists who conducted training before Dec. 21 will receive the appropriate pay and allowance on Dec. 31.

Active-duty members of the U.S. Coast Guard, including those serving outside the United States, have been working without pay since Dec. 21.
