President Trump Towers at Meeting with Pelosi, Schumer about Wall

President Trump met with incoming Speaker of the House of Representatives Leader Nancy Pelosi and incoming Senate Leader Chuck Schumer yesterday (Dec. 11) in "a bipartisan effort to hammer out a border security deal that would prevent a government shutdown."

President Trump began the meeting by pointing to the "tremendous" bipartisan support for criminal justice reform and the Farm Bill.

The President skillfully guided the conversation to the contested topic of border security and the wall.

What happened after that was a collage of Pelosi stuttering buzz words like "evidence-based," Schumer not having much thought of his own and defaulting to a quote from the Washington Post, and President Trump rising above the fray like the leader of the free world.

President Trump connected the wall with border security: "We need border security. The wall is part of border security."

He gave up-to-date stats on decreases in illegal traffic where there are walls: San Diego, El Paso, Tuscon, and Yuma. He pointed to the 99.9% effectiveness of Israel's wall in stopping illegal traffic.

President Trump gave a shout out to border control agents and officers, ICE agents and officers, and the military. He acknowledged the cooperation of the the Mexican government.

The President Trump pointed out that at vulnerable points of the border, people are pouring into our country, including terrorists. "We caught 10 terrorists looking to do harm," he said. "People with contagious medical difficulties are pouring in."

The President said: "$5 billion, we could do a tremoundous part of wall . . . This is a national emergency."

The President said repeatedly that he did not want not to see a government shutdown. But when Schumer insisted on framing the conversation around the topic of a government shutdown and not border security, President Trump said:  "I am proud to shut down this goverment for border security because the people of this country don't want criminals and people with problems pouring in. I will take the mantle . . . I am going to shut it down for border security."

Schumer also bigly stepped into it a couple of times. Once he mumbled: "Elections have consequences, Mr President." To which President Trump calmly responded: "That's why the country is doing so well." Trump's response to Schumer was reminiscent of his retort to Hillary during the second presidential debate. Hillary: "It's just awfully good that someone with the temperment of Donald Trump is not in charge . . ." Candidate Trump: "Because you'd be in jail."

And then in an unabashed insult to the citizens of flyover states (and a non sequitur), Schumer said: "When the President brags about winning North Dakota and Indiana, he's in real trouble."

What also happened, despite talk from the Dems generally about the need for transparency, were multiple requests from Pelosi and Schumer for a closed door meeting. Early on Pelosi said: "I don't think we should have a conversation in front of the press about this." Later, she said: "Let's put a halt to this." A little later: "Let us have our conversation and then we can meet with the press again."  Schumer said: "Let's debate in private."

According to Bill Still, author, movie maker, and political pundit, the video footage of this interaction between President Trump, Pelosi, and Schumer "is one of THE most fascinating pieces of video I've ever seen."
