The Counterstory of Christmas: Gosnell

Pregnant woman 2The Christmas story means many things to many different people. But the nub of the Christmas story is the birth of a child. Nativity creches constructed throughout history, and throughout the world, focus on a newborn baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a makeshift crib.

The meaning of Christmas may be an odd way to segue into a discussion about a serial killer. But if one were to name a story that represents a counterstory to the story of Christmas, Gosnell: The Trial of America's Biggest Serial Killer is a top contender.

The film is based on the story of Dr. Kermit Gosnell who ran an abortion clinic called the Women's Medical Society in West Philadelphia from 1979-2010. The Women's Medical Society was raided for suspected drug traffic. But what police found in Gosnell's clinic made their mouths hit their chests and led to Gosnell's arrest and conviction of murder and manslaughter.

Gosnell screenwriter Andrew Klavenaward-winning crime writer and host of The Andrew Klavan Show, was recently (Dec. 17) interviewed on The Patrick Coffin Show. During the interview, Klaven pointed out that the film is not about abortion: "It's about delivering babies and then killing them." Klaven says it's a crime story: "I'm a crime writer not a preacher." But Klaven also told of his decade-long transformation from a "for abortion" libertarian to a person who "cannot convince myself that that baby is not a person."

Despite the film being a crime story, Klaven reported on a number of viewers who said that the film had changed their mind on abortion. Interviewer Patrick Coffin pointed to the paradox that a film "so much not about abortion so allows a viewer to connect dots" to the reality of abortion.

Gosnell is the story of the murder of children much like Herod's Massacre of the Innocents. And Christmas is a story about the birth of a child. In fact, Christmas celebrates the birth of a child. The two are counternarratives.

The Patrick Coffin interview (48:28m) with Andrew Klaven is available here. The trailer for Gosnell: The Trial of America's Biggest Serial Killer is available here. The film was released to theaters in October 2018. Select theaters continue showings.
