Airlines Will Provide New Gender Options On Passengers’ Tickets

In a move to be more “inclusive” to the transgender community, some airlines are planning to add more gender options for their ticketed passengers.

“In a move that has been praised by transgender rights groups, several major United States airlines plan to begin offering ‘unspecified’ and ‘undisclosed’ gender options to passengers,” according to a WLBT report.

Airlines for America, a trade group that lobbies on behalf of American, Southwest, JetBlue, and United airlines, among others, supported the plan, which the group says will help with continuity as more states begin to provide non-binary gender options on driver’s licenses.

“United Airlines says passengers will be able to select the gender options ‘undisclosed’ or ‘unspecified’ within the next few weeks. In addition, anyone who doesn’t identify with a traditional gender may choose ‘Mx.’ as their title,” the report said. “Other airlines, including Alaska, American, Southwest, Delta and JetBlue, are also working on giving passengers more gender options.”

The New York City Commission on Gender Equality celebrated the move on Twitter.

“We applaud U.S. Airlines for this critical step in making their policies & practices more gender inclusive. It will take multi-sector efforts to ensure safe, equitable, and inclusive environments for all regardless of gender identity or gender expression,” the organization said.
