Acosta Refers To Army Parade As Trump's 'Kim Jong-un Birthday Parade' #Political

https://ift.tt/oRT9ZCu

Former CNN anchor Jim Acosta traveled over to the Center for American Progress on Tuesday to praise the No Kings protesters, claim Saturday’s Army parade was really President Trump’s “Kim Jong-un birthday parade,” and, more humorously, claim that Trump’s attacks against the media put liberal priorities like high-speed rail at risk. Seriously, he said that.

During a panel discussion on the alleged threat Trump poses to free speech, Acosta would toot his own horn, “I’ve been, sort of, trying to shout this from the rooftops or wherever anybody will listen to me. At the end of a bar in Kansas City, whatever. The president of the United States is a danger to this country. Full stop. And I think what we saw over the weekend with the No Kings protest is a mobilization, but to some extent, a recognition that that is the case, and I think you're starting to see some of this reflected in the polling.”

Acosta would also claim:

Even people from the Republican Party were afraid to show up at his birthday parade, the dictator Kim Jong-un birthday parade that he tried to have over the weekend where you saw the video of the tank going by the empty stands and you heard of the squeaking of the tracks of the tank, and it was, sort of, like, what is this? And, so, you know, I think the other thing is, you know, folks have to have hope. You have to have hope that we’re going to get through this. You know, if hundreds of thousands of millions of people had shown up and cheered on Trump as those tanks were rolling down Constitution Avenue, then maybe I would be more worried today. But what I saw over the weekend was millions and millions of people opposed to what he is trying to do to American society showing up in almost every town and community in this country.

There were plenty of reasons why that is a bad comparison. First, an Army parade modeled on France’s Bastille Day—not North Korea—takes place in one city while protests happen in multiple cities. Second, there was a possibility that the parade could’ve been cancelled due to thunder and lightning. Third, the amount of security involved with the Army parade that was attended by the president could lead people to conclude that attendance was an inconvenience that wasn’t worth it.

As it was, Acosta later added, “And one of the images that I took away from this past weekend that really stayed with me were those military veterans. There were some of these military veterans who had fought in World War II and said, 'We defeated fascism the last time. I’m here to do it this time.' I don’t know if anyone saw those images, but they were very stirring images, I thought, and so to some extent, you have to have a little – I think we have a little bit of faith in each other that we can get through this.”

Later, during the audience Q&A portion of the event, Acosta chimed in on the need to strengthen the media in order to advance liberal priorities:

And so, when editorial people at those news organizations and the people that own those news organizations are getting pressure from the administration, the people in those newsrooms feel it every day. We have to come up with a different way of paying journalists in this country to do their jobs so people can get reliable, truthful, and honest information. If we don't do that, forget about building high-speed rails. They’re never going to get built because nobody will ever understand what the point is of having high-speed rail in this country… Folks on the left and center who care about democracy got to start thinking about bigger ideas that get people’s attention because otherwise it’s just, sort of, nibbling around the edges, and let's just go get this person who might get elected, and maybe they’ve got some good ideas. It’s just not going to work. It’s just not going to work.

High-speed rail is the epitome of government waste, cost overruns, and incompetence, but surely the problem of high-speed rail being a special interest for coastal and big city voters like Acosta can be overcome with more media lectures.

JIM ACOSTA: I’ve been, sort of, trying to shout this from the rooftops or wherever anybody will listen to me. At the end of a bar in Kansas City, whatever. The president of the United States is a danger to this country. Full stop. And I think what we saw over the weekend with the No Kings protest is a mobilization, but to some extent, a recognition that that is the case, and I think you're starting to see some of this reflected in the polling.

Even people from the Republican Party were afraid to show up at his birthday parade, the dictator Kim Jong-un birthday parade that he tried to have over the weekend where you saw the video of the tank going by the empty stands and you heard of the squeaking of the tracks of the tank and it was, sort of, like, what is this? And, so, you know, I think the other thing is, you know, folks have to have hope. You have to have hope that we’re going to get through this. You know, if hundreds of thousands of millions of people had shown up and cheered on Trump as those tanks were rolling down Constitution Avenue, then maybe I would be more worried today. But what I saw over the weekend was millions and millions of people opposed to what he is trying to do to American society showing up in almost every town and community in this country.

That was a very powerful thing and so to some extent, we just have to, you know, and I said this when I signed off on my job at CNN. I said "you don't want to give into the lies, you don't want to give into fear, but you have to hold onto hope" as Pollyannaish and cheesy and quaint as that sounds maybe to the young people, I think some of us who are longer in the tooth understand that well.

And one of the images that I took away from this past weekend that really stayed with me were those military veterans. There were some of these military veterans who had fought in World War II and said, "we defeated fascism the last time. I’m here to do it this time." I don’t know if anyone saw those images, but they were very stirring images, I thought, and so to some extent, you have to have a little – I think we have a little bit of faith in each other that we can get through this.

You cannot have the world’s richest people gobbling up newspapers, slashing staffs. I mean, one of the things I did not even mention during all of this is I can tell you, I can guarantee you in almost every newsroom in this country, there is job fear.

They’re never going to get built because nobody will ever understand what the point is of having high-speed rail in this country. So, it has to start with how people get information, in my opinion and I think that’s what I was saying earlier. Folks on the left and center who care about democracy got to start thinking about bigger ideas that get people’s attention because otherwise it’s just, sort of, nibbling around the edges, and let's just go get this person who might get elected, and maybe they’ve got some good ideas. It’s just not going to work. It’s just not going to work.
