Trump Ends Harmful LGBTQ Propaganda Voice, But Will PBS Stick With Them? #Political
In June, the Trump administration ended a federal partnership with the Trevor Project, a leftist nonprofit that purports to provide suicide-prevention support to supposed LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer-plus) children through the federally funded 988 Lifeline. Callers will now be directed to the main hotline.
The Trevor Project bills itself as “the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ young people” and aggressively pushes so-called “gender-affirming” surgeries (like “cross-sex hormones, castration, and breast removal”) onto kids. It has routinely hinted that any opposition to the gay agenda leads to suicides.
It has also figured commonly in PBS News coverage, which regularly promotes the group's slanted surveys on so-called suicidal ideation among LGBTQ youth. Misinformation from the Trevor Project has been cited eight times on the News Hour and three times on PBS News Weekend, including interviews with the group’s CEO. It’s even seeped into PBS’s coverage aimed at children themselves.
A new City Journal piece by Colin Wright and Brad Polumbo was a long-needed look at the bad science and harmful propaganda issued by the Trevor Project, as the rest of the press wept over the loss of the suicide prevention lifeline:
Entirely missing from the partisan reaction is a discussion about why the administration ended the partnership in the first place: the Trevor Project’s promotion of gender ideology and sex pseudoscience, especially toward youth in crisis.
The Trevor Project was once widely considered a lifeline for gay teens facing bullying, family rejection, or isolation. But like many well-meaning groups, it has drifted from its original purpose and transformed into a vehicle for advancing radical and harmful ideologies under the banner of suicide prevention.
....Instead of reassuring children that there is nothing wrong with failing to conform to stereotypes, the Trevor Project suggests that children’s discomfort may indicate that they are transgender and were “assigned” the wrong sex or gender at birth. This is the first step in a pipeline that can lead to puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and disfiguring surgeries.
PBS distributed such propaganda both over the air and on its website, going back years, including on the PBS “classroom voices” section of its website. A February 2019 personal essay, “Student Voice: For LGBTQ teens, 'hope does exist,'” by Luke Hartman (photo courtesy of The Trevor Project), a gay student from Immanuel Christian School in Northern Virginia which doesn’t admit LGBTQ students, included this shout-out: “That’s why it’s so important for us to share these stories of hope and for young people to know they can reach out to organizations like The Trevor Project for help.”
The Trevor Project wasn’t PBS’s only source of LGBTQ propaganda aimed at children; some of it was in-house. WNET, an influential public station which serves New York City and produces much PBS programming, ran a “Teacher’s Voice” piece in October 2020, “Queering Your Classroom with the Understanding LGTBQ+ Identity Toolkit,” written by an eighth-grade NYC teacher. That article has been deleted from the WNET website, but it’s preserved at the Internet Archive.
The “LGBTQ+ Identity Toolkit” the teacher referenced was previously hosted on PBS’s website for teachers, but has also apparently been deleted.
