Free Speech Win: Americans Are Turning Back to First Amendment in 2025 #Political
Americans increasingly support the First Amendment as Big Tech platforms and the U.S. government draw down their censorship efforts. This was evident in a 2025 poll showing that over half of Americans strongly disagree that the First Amendment is too broad.
This is a testament to the efforts of free speech warriors, with people like Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk having repeatedly challenged censorship by speaking the truth in hostile places, even to the point of death.
MRC Free Speech America has continually urged those censored on social media to defend their rights, encouraged members of Congress to support free speech, and emphatically called out anti-free speech leaders in government and Big Tech.
Now, with the Biden administration gone, its censorship initiatives are being dismantled and social media companies that collaborated in silencing online speech are making moves away from censorship during the second Trump administration.
MRC Free Speech America Vice President Dan Schneider touted the Media Research Center’s years-long effort to unite Americans behind the First Amendment. “We’ve worked for years to wake Americans up to the heinous censorship pushed by bad actors like Google and to shine a bright light on Joe Biden’s efforts to push Big Tech to silence Free Speech. Americans have seen how much we have to lose by allowing the government to circumvent the First Amendment,” Schneider said.
He added, “They’ve seen a president silenced, defense of biological reality punished and a government board set up to police so-called disinformation. Now the censors are on the run.”
MRC researchers have compiled nearly 8,500 cases of social media censorship in their exclusive CensorTrack database, while consistently exposing the Biden administration’s unceasing attempts to push Big Tech into directly squashing First Amendment-protected speech. In total, the MRC exposed no less than 57 censorship initiatives involving 93 federal agencies directed by the Biden administration.
In April 2025, the National Speech Index, using data from the Polarization Research Lab, found that just above 50 percent of Americans stood firmly by the First Amendment, up from 46 percent in January 2025 and up from 44 percent in January 2024.
At the same time, only nine percent of Americans completely endorsed the statement that the “First Amendment goes too far in the rights it guarantees,” down from 10 percent in January 2025 and 15 percent in January 2024.
