Kimmel, Chieng See Ulterior Motives In Trump's MBS Meeting #Political
Neither ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel nor Comedy Central’s The Daily Show host-of-the-week Ronny Chieng are foreign policy experts, but on Tuesday, they did try to play one on TV. As President Trump welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the White House, Kimmel suggested it was all part of a get-rich-quick scheme involving Eric and Don Jr. while Chieng suggested it was part of Trump’s Saudi Arabia First policy.
Kimmel teed up a clip of Trump in the Oval Office with MBS and reporters by declaring, “Naturally, Trump is pulling out all the stops for his trillionaire friend, who also happens to be doing business with Don Jr. and Eric.”
The clip showed Kimmel’s ABC colleague, Mary Bruce, wondering, “Is it appropriate, Mr. President, for your family to be doing business in Saudi Arabia while you're president? Is that a conflict of interest? And your royal highness, the U.S. intelligence concluded that you orchestrated the brutal murder of a journalist. 9/11 families are furious that you're here in the Oval Office. Why should Americans trust you? And the same to you, Mr. President.”
Trump responded by calling ABC “fake news” and claiming, “As far as this gentleman is concerned, he's done a phenomenal job. You're mentioning somebody that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. And we can leave it at that. You don't have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that.”
Kimmel didn’t appreciate the response, “Sorry, how dare you embarrass a man who had a columnist sawed into pieces. Things happen. Things happen? This is not an episode of The Sopranos. You're the president of the United States.”
Earlier, on The Daily Show, Chieng was showing a newfound respect for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene amid her transformation from Trump fan to Trump critic, “And how dare she? How dare she imply that Trump serves foreign countries? The president is out here every day thinking about America first.”
Following a brief clip from Fox Business’s Liz Claman, Chieng continued, “Okay, look, sometimes America First means Saudi Arabia First. But so what? He rolled out the red carpet for MBS. It's not like Trump is endorsing everything he's done.”
After a truncated version of the same clip Kimmel showed, Chieng retorted, “Yeah, hey, hey, shut up! A little etiquette, please! This man is a guest in our country. Why are you asking him about the journalist he bonesawed? It’s like no one has manners anymore! Trump is dealing with a lot of shit right now. Okay, he's lost the Epstein vote, they're being mean to his best friend. One more reasonable question and he's going to [bleep] lose it!”
Kimmel and Chieng wanted to reduce the U.S.-Saudi relationship to Jamal Khashoggi and any possible business deals involving Trump’s children. However, the U.S.-Saudi strategic partnership goes back decades, and even President Biden was forced to backtrack on his promise to turn Saudi Arabia into a pariah because geopolitical realities didn’t care about his feelings. One of Trump’s biggest goals is to get the Saudis to normalize relations with Israel, and he isn’t going to get there by listening to Mary Bruce, Jimmy Kimmel, or Ronny Chieng.
