Daily Show Doubles Down On Border Patrol-Nazi Comparisons #Political

After the Trump administration reassigned Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino on Tuesday, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show doubled down on the idea that Bovino led some Nazi-like operation in Minneapolis and cited his clothes and haircut as proof.

Correspondent Troy Iwata told host-of-the-week Desi Lydic that the final straw for Trump was “an image issue. He likes a strong leader, and as you can see, Bovino falls short of that. Literally. I mean, with respect, he looks like he's leaving his shift at the chocolate factory.”

Lydic pretended to be above the idea of criticizing Bovino’s physical appearance, “Okay, Troy, I don't think we need to criticize his appearance here. I think it's more relevant to focus on his sinister behavior in the crackdown. And also the fact that he threw tear gas like a mathlete whose arm fell asleep.”

Iwata eventually moved to Bovino’s allegedly Nazi-like trench coat, “Desi, you can't discount the importance of appearances here. Like his decision to dress as a bad guy from The Sound of Music.”

This time Lydic agreed, “Exactly, exactly. See, that's a performance issue because it's confusing when people can't tell if he's looking for immigrants or the Von Trapp children.”

Iwata then continued with the idea, “Yes, yes. Especially when it looks like he has to buy his Nazi outfits in the Hitler Youth section, you know. With respect.”

That led to more jabs at Bovino’s physical appearance, “Troy, please stop focusing on his appearance. He can't change the fact that he has resting illiterate face. With respect.”

Iwata claimed that “You know, he tried to change, Desi. Before last week, he projected an image that experts said, quote, ‘Looks like what ChatGPT generates from the prompt, ‘Guy who [bleep] his cousin.’”

Lydic then turned to Bovino’s haircut, “See, I wouldn't emphasize his facial features. I'd emphasize his choice of a haircut. How can he crack down on Latinos while asking his barber to give the sides of his head a Brazilian? With respect.”

Also focusing on Bovino’s hair, Iwata added, “Well, last week he tried to add glasses to try to look smarter, but as you can see, it backfired. President Trump hates DEI, so he can't have the head of Border Patrol looking like a Bushwick lesbian.”

Lydic piled on, “I can see why that look didn't fly with Trump. From the neck down, it says ‘secret police,’ but from the neck up, it says, ‘Open mic poem about my vulva.’ Respectfully! Respectfully!”

Iwata got in the final attack when he declared, “You know, regardless of why Greg Bovino is leaving Minneapolis, the important thing is that he's leaving and that he left with his head held high, looking like a testicle getting shaved before surgery.”

The Daily Show has spent most of January ignoring violence and other criminal behavior in Minneapolis, so the dumb idea that a trench coat or short haircut makes one a Nazi might actually seem reasonable to its cast. For everyone else, it highlights the dangers of getting your news from Comedy Central.

Here is a transcript for the January 27 show:

DESI LYDIC: Troy, what was the final straw for Trump?

TROY IWATA: Well, Desi, there's no doubt it was Greg Bovino's handling of the crackdown in Minnesota. But for Trump, it was also an image issue. He likes a strong leader, and as you can see, Bovino falls short of that. Literally. I mean, with respect, he looks like he's leaving his shift at the chocolate factory.

LYDIC: Okay, Troy, I don't think we need to criticize his appearance here. I think it's more relevant to focus on his sinister behavior in the crackdown. And also the fact that he threw tear gas like a mathlete whose arm fell asleep.

IWATA: Yes, that's true. Plus, when he throws the tear gas, the canister just hits your shins.

LYDIC: Troy!

IWATA: I mean that with respect.

LYDIC: With respect.

IWATA: With all the respect. But at the same time, Desi, you can't discount the importance of appearances here. Like his decision to dress as a bad guy from The Sound of Music.

LYDIC: Exactly, exactly. See, that's a performance issue because it's confusing when people can't tell if he's looking for immigrants or the Von Trapp children.

IWATA: Yes, yes. Especially when it looks like he has to buy his Nazi outfits in the Hitler Youth section, you know. With respect.

LYDIC: Troy, please stop focusing on his appearance. He can't change the fact that he has resting illiterate face. With respect.

IWATA: Yes, with respect. You know, he tried to change, Desi. Before last week, he projected an image that experts said, quote, "Looks like what ChatGPT generates from the prompt, ‘Guy who [bleep] his cousin.’"

LYDIC: Yeah, yeah. See, I wouldn't emphasize his facial features. I'd emphasize his choice of a haircut. How can he crack down on Latinos while asking his barber to give the sides of his head a Brazilian? With respect.

IWATA: Yes, nothing but respect.

LYDIC: So much respect. Okay, so how did Bovino try to fix his image?

IWATA: Well, last week he tried to add glasses to try to look smarter, but as you can see, it backfired. President Trump hates DEI, so he can't have the head of Border Patrol looking like a Bushwick lesbian.

LYDIC: I can see why that look didn't fly with Trump. From the neck down, it says ‘secret police,’ but from the neck up, it says, "Open mic poem about my vulva." Respectfully! Respectfully!

IWATA: So much respect for the vulva.

BOTH: God bless the vulva.

LYDIC: God bless.

IWATA: You know, regardless of why Greg Bovino is leaving Minneapolis, the important thing is that he's leaving and that he left with his head held high, looking like a testicle getting shaved before surgery.

LYDIC: Oh, Troy!

IWATA: Respectfully.

LYDIC: Respectfully. Respectfully. Troy Iwata, everyone.
