Networks Offer Joyous Jesse Jackson Funeral -- SKIP Anti-Trump Remarks #Political

Emily Goodin at the New York Post reported that Jesse Jackson's raucous funeral on Friday with three former Democrat presidents included a pile of attacks on President Trump. One would think the networks would love that -- but on the Friday night newscasts, the broadcast networks skipped over the anti-Trump zingers, keeping it as positive and nebulous as possible.

For gossips, let's note that Michelle Obama skipped this event again. Hillary Clinton was there. Jill Biden was there. Kamala Harris was there. Michelle skipped a black funeral in her own home town. None of these networks mentioned her, either.

ABC's World News Tonight spent two minutes on the funeral with lots of upbeat music, and small upbeat quotes from Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. Pierre Thomas gushed: "They came today 10,000 strong to help keep hope alive -- not for a funeral, but a black church-style homegoing service. To celebrate the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson, civil rights legend and major American political figure….Jackson, that clarion voice for justice, will never be silenced."

On CBS Evening News, fill-in anchor Major Garrett offered a 42-second anchor brief: “Some of the biggest names in politics, particularly on the Democratic side of the aisle, were on hand today in Chicago for the funeral of Reverend Jesse Jackson.” Then came a Kamala Harris clip: “He gave us the language, the rainbow, to understand, as has been said, the beauty that comes after the storm, when we see what is possible and what can be unburdened by what has been.”

The PBS News Hour also offered almost two minutes. Anchor Geoff Bennett summarized: “And thousands gathered in Chicago today to pay their respects to the late Reverend Jesse Jackson. Choirs and gospel singers provided the soundtrack to a public celebration of life for the late civil rights leader.” Obama, Biden, and Clinton were quoted, but there were no anti-Trump comments.

NBC Nightly News had no story on Jesse Jackson on Friday night.

NPR's All Things Considered offered more than five minutes on the Jackson funeral. Their Chicago-based reporter Cheryl Corley was gushing: "It was such a celebration, an exquisite collection of speakers that were like a living diagram of Jesse Jackson's life, each with a highlight about him, including his son, Yusef Jackson, who's now the CEO of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, who said that his father's influence was so vast that no honorary service could encompass it."

At least NPR offered the vaguest reference to anti-Trump talk. Religion reporter Jason DeRose noted “And national leaders spoke, like the Reverend Al Sharpton, who talked about the urgency of this current political moment in the US.” The New York Post reported Sharpton said “I don’t care what they do in Washington, I care what we do in the community. We’ve beat people bigger than Trump!”
