WATCH: Dashcam Video Played In Trial Of Man Who Shot Two Officers During Roadside Stop
Dashcam video was released of a traffic stop turned shootout in the trial of a man from Northampton County, Pennsylvania, that helped to convict the man on two counts of attempted murder.
In November of last year, , 22-year-old Daniel Clary, was initially pulled over by 13-year veteran Cpl. Seth Kelly for speeding. After speaking with Clary, Cpl. Kelly called for backup to conduct a field sobriety test. Trooper Ryan Seiple arrived on the scene on Route 33, about 20 miles north of Bethlehem to help with the roadside stop. After three failed sobriety test, the troopers asked Clary to put his hands behind his back so he could be detained.
Instead of complying with the officers, Clary began to resist and at one point in the video you can see him reach for Kelly’s holstered gun. After being tased several times by the troopers, Clay, (appearing to be in pain) asks the troopers to stop.
After fighting with the troopers and being tased repeatedly, Clay breaks away from the officers, runs around the front of his car and reaches in the driver side window producing a gun of his own from the front seat. Clay shot off several rounds at the troopers, striking oth of them as they returned fire.
In an earlier hearing, Seiple recalls falling backward during the shootout, “The first thought that crossed my mind was, ‘Please don’t let me get shot in the back of the spine,’” he testified. “The second was, ‘Don’t let me get shot in the head.’ The third was, ‘Don’t let me die.’”
Having been shot several times in the course of the exchange, Clary jumped in his car and drove himself to nearby Easton Hospital while Seiple ran to Kelly’s side who had been shot three times, once in an artery.
Once Clary had arrived at the emergency room to be seen for his injuries, he confessed to shooting both troopers and attempting to disarm them, according to state police. He was taken to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest for followup surgery and was in the hospital for an additional five days recovering.
Kelly, on the other hand, was bleeding out and screaming in pain as he applied a tourniquet to his own leg. Seiple helped to apply a second tourniquet while they waited for help to arrive. Kelly was airlifted to the hospital for his injuries during the shootout. Kelly told the International Association of Chiefs of Police that he was put in a medically induced coma for 12 days and has no recollection of the shooting at all.
Daniel Clary was convicted of multiple felonies, including attempted murder of both Kelly and Seiple. Clary will be sentenced Aug. 31st, 2018.
