USA Today Runs Hit Piece On Kavanaugh Calling For Him To Never Coach Basketball Again

On Friday night, USA Today ran a column by Erik Brady calling on Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be kept from coaching children even if he is cleared of all uncorroborated allegations of sexual assault that have brought his nomination to a halt. Kavanaugh is a beloved girls basketball coach, including his daughter’s team.

When Kavanaugh was nominated in July, NPR reported:  “…He also coached the fourth- through sixth-grade girls basketball teams at Blessed Sacrament, as well as a Montgomery County Recreation girls basketball team and the Classics AAU second grade girls basketball team.”

“Much has been written about Brett Kavanaugh as President Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, but the discussion has focused on his record as a federal judge and in his legal career. I’d like to talk about him as Coach K. Like the one at Duke University, this Coach K also is a mentor to student-athletes who love basketball. But his players are sixth-grade girls.

Brett’s older daughter and mine have been classmates at Blessed Sacrament School, a small Catholic school in the District, for the past seven years. On evenings and weekends, you’re likely to find Brett at a local gym or athletic field, encouraging his players or watching games with his daughters and their friends. He coaches not one but two girls’ basketball teams. His positive attitude and calm demeanor make the game fun and allow each player to shine. The results have been good: This past season, he led the Blessed Sacrament School’s sixth-grade girls team to an undefeated season and a citywide championship in the local Catholic youth league. To the parents with players on the squad, it’s no surprise that the team photograph with the trophy is displayed prominently in his chambers.”

In a now deleted tweet, the official USA TODAY Sports Twitter account (@usatodaysports) tweeted:

“The U.S. Senate may yet confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, but he should stay off basketball courts for now when kids are around,” writes  .” along with the photo (seen below) of Kavanaugh with his daughter’s team for added emphasis.

The photo has since been changed and USA TODAY [on their official Twitter page (@USATODAY)], made the following statement Saturday regarding the deleted tweet:

“A previous tweet contained a statement that has since been edited out of a sports column. That tweet has been deleted. The updated opinion column and editor’s clarification are here:”

USA TODAY Sports has been retweeting the story on their official Twitter page. Retweeted from A.J. Perez (@byajperez): “Is Brett Kavanaugh right that he can no longer coach girls basketball?”

Brady’s article on USA Today reports that although Kavanaugh has a clean record and is still qualified to coach, he still wants to see Kavanaugh permanently barred from coaching children:

“Brett Kavanaugh testified the other day that he might never coach girls’ basketball again.

He shouldn’t – at least not until further investigation has concluded.

The U.S. Senate may yet confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, but he should stay off basketball courts for now when kids are around…

…Kavanaugh is free to continue coaching in the Catholic Youth Organization and his daughters’ private school in Washington, according to Edward McFadden, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Washington. He said a coach accused of sexual misconduct would have to go through the full legal process and be convicted before being banned.

McFadden told USA TODAY Sports’ A.J. Perez on Friday that “adult volunteers with extensive contact with children” go through fingerprinting, criminal background checks and training under what is called the VIRTUS program.

“The person is VIRTUS-trained,” McFadden said of Kavanaugh, “and has gone through a background check, which was clean.”

Brady closes out his column with an appeal to ban Kavanaugh from ever coaching girls basketball again: “The nation is deeply divided. Sometimes it feels like we don’t agree on anything anymore. But credibly accused sex offenders should not coach youth basketball, girls or boys, without deeper investigation. Can’t we all agree on that?”

USA Today, and Brady were both gutted on Twitter. Here are a few reactions:

“This is a new low–accusing Kavanaugh of being a child molester now, based on absolutely nothing. ”

Cheong continues this thought in a follow up tweet: “I don’t care where you stand on the political spectrum. If you care about human decency at all, you should not be okay with tearing down a person’s reputation by falsely accusing them of pedophilia just because you disagree with them politically. Don’t make an enemy of civility.”

Cheong points out that the words chosen by Brady to describe Kavanaugh are slanderous:

Rep. Steven Smith (@RepStevenSmith) had the same thought after reading the USA Today article and tweeted:

“ should sue you for defamation. This is far worse than the Duke Lacrosse case. ”

Jedediah Bila (@JedediahBila) called the article a disgrace:

“This is disgraceful, . The man was accused of atrocities with no evidence, no corroboration, no proof. He’s undergone 6 FBI investigations in his life. Maybe wait to criminalize someone till you have damn good reason? I’m utterly disgusted. ”

John Cardillo (@johncardillo) called Brady out for being a “gutless punk” and pointed out the fact that Brady’s article degrades and trivializes REAL victims.

“., this is disgusting. You’re a gutless punk. You’ve disgraced yourself with this baseless implication against an innocent man. In addition, you’ve just trivialized and degraded real victims, and given cover to real offenders. ”
