Justice Kavanaugh Hires First All Female Law Clerk Team in SCOTUS History
Sunday morning, Kavanaugh was in his new chambers, just one day after being confirmed in preparation for the arguments the court will hear as it enters the second week of its term. Kavanaugh met with his four law clerks, all women – a first for the Supreme Court!
The New York Times reported on Sunday that only one of the four women, Kim Jackson, previously worked for Kavanaugh at the appellate court level. The other three women, Shannon Grammel, Megan Lacy, and Sara Nommensen, all worked for appeals court judges appointed by Republicans. Jackson will become one of three black law clerks working at the Supreme Court this term, and like Kavanaugh went to Yale Law School.
Grammel is a former president of the Stanford Law Review, and just began working at the Justice Department.
Lacy was part of the White House team that worked on Kavanaugh’s nomination and is a former counsel to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa). She attended law school at the University of Virginia.

Nommensen worked at the Justice Department’s office of legal counsel and was a student of Kavanaugh’s in the class he taught at Harvard Law School.
During Kavanaugh’s 12 years on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, the majority of clerks he hired were women, which he said should be a good indicator of his views on women in the workplace.
“My women law clerks said I was one of the strongest advocates in the federal judiciary for women lawyers,” Kavanaugh said during the hearing. “And they wrote that the legal profession is fairer and more equal because of me.”
He added: “In my time on the bench, no federal judge — not a single one in the country — has sent more women law clerks to clerk on the Supreme Court than I have.”
“All four are women. If confirmed, I’ll be the first justice in the history of the Supreme Court to have a group of all-women law clerks. That is who I am.”
