LISTEN: Ad For Claire McCaskill: I’m Not One Of Those “Crazy” Democrats

Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill’s campaign is doing their best to convince Missouri voters that she is not “one of those crazy Democrats,” running a radio ad during the final stretch for her fight for re-election.

The ad has been on air in mid-Missouri for the last week or so, as part of McCaskill’s closing argument in one of the most closely watched Senate races.

McCaskill swears she is a “cool” Democrat. You know, with her voting for the Iran nuclear deal, for Obamacare, and voting against both Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh – having backed Harry Reid’s nuclear option in 2013, and against the succeeding tax reform bill. She was an early endorser of Obama in 2008, and one of the earliest Hillary endorsers in 2016.

Tuesday, her campaign released a new television ad that features veterans who support McCaskill, with one man saying of the incumbent senator, “you don’t have to like her,” then praising her work in the Senate.

The radio ad takes it to a new level though, attempting to separate McCaskill from unnamed “crazy Democrats.”

The ad features two middle-aged men discussing the Senate race between McCaskill and state Attorney General Josh Hawley, who is Republican, with the narrators describing him as “a man in a hurry.”

One man then turns to McCaskill saying, “I don’t always agree with Claire McCaskill.”

“But she works hard, fighting against those tariffs, doing all those town halls,” the man adds. “Claire’s not afraid to stand up against her own party.”

The other man replies, “Yep, and Claire’s not one of those crazy Democrats. She works in the middle and finds compromise.”

The fact remains, McCaskill isn’t “right in the middle,” nor has she ever been. Every six years, she must convince voters that she’s a down-the-middle moderate, but will she convince anyone?

Representing a party that’s obsessed with identity politics, some Democrats are getting a different idea from McCaskill’s message.

State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, a Democrat whose district includes Ferguson, told CNN that she thinks the ad could be referring to African-American voters in the state’s cities, as well as other subsets from the Democratic base.

McCaskill “is calling her base in the urban areas crazy Democrats,” Chappelle-Nadal said, “and she’s relying on those so-called crazy Democrats to make sure she wins.”

Chappelle-Nadal (@MariaChappelleN), posted a series of tweets Wednesday in which she calls McCaskill a “bigot,” and accuses her of being a white nationalist for her calling Dems “crazy.”

“In races this close, you never want to piss on your base by calling them “crazy Democrats” in rural radio ads. And don’t be mad at those who are keeping you accountable.https://soundcloud.com/user-418353237/mccaskill-radio-ad

“Bigots use the term “crazy” all the time. Shame on you, @clairecmc.”

“If Sen. @clairecmc identifies with Trump in her tv and radio media ads, then she must be a white NATIONALIST, too. Only a white nationalist would use the term “crazy Democrats.”https://soundcloud.com/user-418353237/mccaskill-radio-ad

“Using the term “crazy” — while targeting a specific group — is the exercise of white supremacy. No bueno for POC.”

Speaking to The Weekly Standard, Chappelle-Nadal elaborated:

“I want to know who these ‘crazy Democrats’ are,” state senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, who represents parts of North St. Louis, told THE WEEKLY STANDARD. “Is she talking about African Americans? Is she talking about the LGBT community? Is she talking about pro-choicers? Is she talking about the activists on the ground that have been responding to racial inequity? The question she needs to be asked and forced to answer is who are the crazy Democrats she’s talking about and relying on to vote for her in November. We deserve an answer.”

Last year, McCaskill called on Chappelle-Nadal to resign after her expressing her hopes that Trump would be assassinated. Although Chappelle-Nadal did remove the post and apologized, she refused to step down. Chappelle-Nadal stated previously that she will be writing a candidate in rather than voting for McCaskill, who she says has been “very disappointing.”

State Representative Courtney Curtis called the ad a “coded message” TWS ctd:

State Representative Courtney Curtis represents the St. Louis-adjacent city of Ferguson, where racial tensions flared following the August 2014 police shooting of African-American teenager Michael Brown. Curtis told TWS that the McCaskill ad was a “dog whistle.”

“It’s a message that’s coded, that’s reaching out to a certain kind of person and trying to play or cater to their worst fears or thoughts by saying ‘those crazy Democrats,’” Curtis said. “And the immediate question is who are you talking about, and then what are you doing to that person in trying to get this voter in this way or manner . . . It almost dehumanizes or devalues the person’s worth or contribution to the community.”

In a recent poll, Hawley led McCaskill by 7 points, topping McCaskill at 49% to 42% with 5% undecided and the other 4% going to a collection of third party candidates, according to the Washington Examiner.

David M. Drucker (@DavidMDrucker), contributing writer with Vanity Fair and Senior Political Correspondent for CNN, tweeted on Wednesday, “NEW: leads by 7 points in closely watched , according to a fresh poll conducted for the challenger’s campaign.

Real Clear Politics has the race much closer, but Hawley still ahead:

The walls are quickly closing in on McCaskill’s campaign. Just recently, Project Veritas captured footage of McCaskill’s campaign that was less than flattering.

James O’Keefe tweeted on October 19th:

“Regarding McCaskill’s central grievance, Missouri’s Merchandising Practices Act is not designed to protect political campaigns from investigative journalists. Misapplying Missouri’s Merchandising Practices Act in this case would render it: the “Missouri Incumbent Protection Act.””

The day before this, O’Keefe tweeted this damaging video:

“Senator McCaskill – where is the “fraud” in these undercover videos of your campaign staffers explaining your real agenda “could hurt your ability to get elected?” All I see is your staff being honest, saying behind closed doors what you’d never say on the campaign trail.”

McCaskill’s team responded by trying to discredit O’Keefe and Project Veritas’ work:

“This is absurd, Claire McCaskill is trying to criminalize investigative journalism. On the bright side, it will lead to more media covering the undercover videos (https://youtu.be/uo_2tUaYews )”

Dana Loesch (@DLoesh) weighed in on McCaskill’s threats, tweeting:

“McCaskill threatening to go after ⁦@JamesOKeefeIII⁩ and ⁦@Project_Veritas⁩ because they exposed her apparent support for a full on semi-auto rifle ban and hidden agenda. Wouldn’t be a story if she had just been transparent with voters. https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/election/article220193095.html
