Second Migrant Caravan: Mexico Warns of Molotov Cocktail Threat

A warning was issued by Mexico’s immigration authorities over individuals in Guatemala who are building Molotov cocktails and other makeshift incendiary devices they plan to use against federal police officers guarding their southern border, according to a recent report by Breitbart.

The alert comes after a group of migrants in what’s being dubbed the second caravan threw rocks at officials at the Guatemala-Mexico Border and tried breaking through international barriers. It has been confirmed by Mexican law enforcement officials that some of the protesters in the clash carried firearms.

Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) issued the warning, claiming it learned of several individuals in Tecan Uman, Guatemala, were building Molotov cocktails with the intention of using them against Mexican border authoritiess. INM asked in a public statement for the Guatemalan government to intervene, adding that the violent actions were those of “criminals and not of a vulnerable migrant population.”

Instituto Nacional de Migración posted on Facebook:

“El gobmx tiene conocimiento que en Tecún Umán, #Guatemala, se preparan bombas Molotov para arrojarlas a la Policía Federal que resguarda la línea fronteriza. #México pide al Gobierno de Guatemala actúe ante actos que no son de población migrante vulnerable, sino de delincuentes.

The group in Guatemala appears to be from another caravan of migrants making their way into Mexico, then into the United States.

Big League Politics reported on Tuesday that specific group clashed violently with authorities at one of the border fences in Guatemala as they began to make their way into Mexico, forcing their way through fences. Ten police officers sustained various injuries, with one 26-year-old Honduran national losing their life, Mexico’s Secretariat of the interior confirmed in a statement.

“Mexico does not criminalize undocumented immigration,” he said.

Authorities in both Guatemala and Mexico are working to identify the individuals who they believe are behind the clashes as well as those preparing the improvised incendiary devices, said Mexico’s Secretary of the Interior Alfredo Navarrete Prida.

The group in Guatemala is completely separate from the migrant caravan currently making its way through Mexico, headed toward the United States.

Members of the northern caravan have been asked by the government of Mexico to follow immigration law so they would have the opportunity to receive state-funded healthcare, temporary employment, and education.

The group, however, turned down the offers and is preparing to continue north. 422 migrants from the caravan requested assistance from Mexican authorities to return home.
