New Sex Education: Boys Can Have Periods Too

A newly released sex education curriculum teaches elementary school boys that they too can have periods.

School administrators and teachers in Brighton, UK have been instructed to be more inclusive when describing menstrual cycles. “The teacher guidance, from Brighton & Hove City Council, states: ‘Trans boys and men and non-binary people may have periods.’ It says language about menstruation must be inclusive of ‘all genders’ and orders that ‘bins for used period products are provided in all toilets’ for children.” The new education comes after it was established that the school has over 40 children who identify as a different gender than which they were born, according to Daily Mail.

Brighton & Hove City Council stated that, “By encouraging effective education on menstruation and puberty, we hope to reduce stigma and ensure no child or young person feels shame in asking for period products inside or outside of school if they need them… Our approach recognizes the fact that some people who have periods are trans or non-binary.”

The Council promotes that transgender boys have the right to receive education how how to deal with menstruating. The effort to make there be no difference or separation between boys and girls also comes from the Council’s implementation of a “Trans Inclusion Schools Toolkit” that is designed to help teachers dealing with children who struggle with their biological sex. The toolkit includes ideas on how to make school environments more friendly and accepting. The kit suggests that one of the best ways to reduce bullying of trans-kids is to implement a gender-neutral uniform as to not upset any child contemplating their sexuality.
