MITCH IS ON BOARD: Gets Ready For The ‘Coming Days And WEEKS’ of Shutdown
Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.,) the Senate majority leader, said after a meeting at the White House with President Trump and congressional representatives in both parties that the government shutdown could continue for weeks.
“It was a civil discussion. We’re hopeful that somehow in the coming days and weeks we’ll be able to reach an agreement,” McConnell told reporters outside the West Wing on Wednesday.
Democratic and Republican leaders met in the situation room with President Trump, in what the White House called a “briefing” on border security.
Sources say that the meeting got off to a bad start, with Republicans accusing Democrats of interrupting Homeland Security officials.

“I don’t think any particular progress was made today, but we talked about all aspects of it. It was a civil discussion,” Majority leader McConnell said.
The government shutdown began at midnight on Dec. 22, after Democrats refused to fund President Trump’s border wall – and President Trump refused to sign a continuing resolution to fund the government — without funds for the project, which he says is needed for “national security” reasons.
Democrats in the House plan to vote on a package of legislation Thursday, aimed at reopening the federal government. One bill would fund a slew of government agencies through Sept. 30, while another would fund the Department of Homeland Security through Feb. 8.
McConnell added: “As I’ve said for the last two weeks, the Senate will be glad to vote on a measure that the House passes that the president will sign. But we’re not going to vote on anything else.”
McConnell said Wednesday that he would not bring Democratic proposals up for a vote in the Senate — because President Trump would not sign them into law.
Meanwhile on the Democrat side…
Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer announced that they are plunging ahead with bills in the House to end the government shutdown without providing President Trump his $5 billion in border Wall funding. Those bills have no chance of being introduced in the Senate, according to Mitch McConnell’s spokesman.
“The only reason that they are shutting down the government is very simple. They want to try and leverage that shutdown into their proposals into border security. We want strong border security. We believe ours are better. But to use the shutdown as hostage, which they had no argument against, is wrong,” Schumer said. Schumer said that President Trump is having a “temper tantrum.”
