BREAKING: Jussie Smollett Charged with 16 Felonies by Grand Jury

Jussie Smollett, the “Empire” actor who was recently outed for allegedly committing a hate crime against himself, has been charged with 16 felonies by a Cook County, Illinois grand jury.

“Now the grand jury has returned 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report,” said ABC7.

Smollett had originally been charged with only one felony count of disorderly conduct, the crime which encompasses filing false reports in Illinois.

“The grand jury returned two separate sets of charges,” the report said. “The first set are related to what Smollett told officers about the alleged attack, including that the attackers called him racial and homophobic slurs, struck him with his their hands, put a noose around his neck, and poured some sort of chemical substance on him.”

“The second set of charges are related to the second interview Smollett had with police about the alleged attack later that day,” the report continued.

In late January, the actor claimed that two men physically attacked him in the street in the wee hours of the morning, pouring bleach on him and tying a rope around his neck. After his two attackers were found to be friends and fellow “Empire” cast members, the pair told police that Smollett had paid them $3500 to orchestrate the attack.

“Defendant Smollett stated that he wanted [the brothers] to appear to attack him on the evening of January 28, 2019 near his apartment building in Streeterville. Defendant Smollett also stated that he wanted the brothers to catch his attention by calling him an “Empire F—— Empire N—–.” Defendant Smollett firther detailed that he wanted Abel to attack him, but not to hurt him too badly and to give him a chance to appear to fight back,” said a proffer from prosecutors.

Smollett is also accused of mailing himself a racist and threatening note to the “Empire” set days before orchestrating the attack.
